The bar space underneath the Chelsea hotel has gone through a lot of changes over the years. For the current incarnation, the owners tore out everything that was previously added and started over. Now dubbed The Chelsea Room, the spot bills itself as a lounge for those who don't want to deal with the overhyped madness at clubs a little farther downtown in the Meatpacking District. Expect lots of exposed brick, even on the arched ceilings that provide the small space with a little breathing room. Banquettes line the walls, just asking well-clad patrons to perch on top of them and shimmy to the music. The room sports a selection of cocktails and bottle service. Yes, the artists and beat poets who made the hotel famous wouldn't like that very much, but it sure appeals to the stylisy twentysomethings looking to make a night in this subterranean space. Think of it as a middle-of-the week spot for when you're looking to have a good time but still keep things low-key.
