Description:

A business has existed in this building almost as long as the country has. In 1794, it was a grocery and wine shop. Over the generations, it has hosted a grocer, tavern, disorderly house, and, in the '20s, a speakeasy serving up beer along with its meals. Since 1979, it has been home to the Bridge Cafe, which has been dishing up pastas, chicken, fish, and lamb. Buffalo steak, too.

In the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge, it draws a daytime crowd from City Hall (during the Koch mayoralty, it served as a virtual lunchroom for the administration), the courts, and neighborhood businesses. In the evenings, it draws locals - singles as well as families - with its casual vibe.
