Description:
While its name might suggest a rowdy, drink-pounding vibe, this small East Village alehouse is far from a boisterous bar. In fact, the sole bartender, donning a Franciscan robe, might kindly shush you if youre being too loud. Not kiddingthe bar promotes a quiet, monastic environment. Everything from classical music and Gregorian chant to French pop and light rock seep from the speakers and fresco-like murals of monks clutching barrels of ale as well as angels flying over trumpeters decorate the walls around the finely crafted wooden bar. Serving a rotating selection of strong alesmostly Belgian, but also English, German and Italian (you can check out the tap selection, but there are more than 40 bottles on the list as well), Burp Castle attracts a steady crowd of beer connoisseurs, tourists and even some NYU students looking to expand their palates. Its a rare thing these daysa bar that promotes civil conversations and the enjoyment of world-class ales over obnoxious behavior. And frankly, were glad its here.
