Is the Cabin Down Below too subterranean for you? Well, Alphabet City is set to get a similarly off the radar watering hole, but this one is on the second floor. Formerly the clubby space Uncle Mings, the new owners of this spot went with a New York fashion truism: Black always looks good. They covered just about every corner of the bar in the color, including the lighting fixtures, which seem too ooze black paint. Don't think you'll spot a glimpse of daylight here, the windows were boarded over and covered with blackout curtains for good measure. The room wasn't designed for vampires, per se. It was designed for the East Village's version of the blood-sucker: the perpetually hung over. If you sleep through the daylight, head here to suck down some beers and listen to the rock n' roll soundtrack.
