Description:
Drinking establishments keep reaching further into the past for inspiration, and continuing in that vein is Lillie's, an upscale Victorian pub near Union Square that's named after Irish-American socialite Lillie Langtry and evokes an urbane 19th-century Ireland. It's a pretty spot with exposed brick, golden light and glowing stained-glass windows. Vintage paintings, hanging lanterns, red-velvet booths and other antique flourishesmany of which were scored from a Victorian mansion in Belfastgive it an appropriately worn-in charm.
Come for three fingers of Glenfiddich or a pint of Smithwicks (or any of the other 18 brews on tap, almost all $6), stay for the Irish stew ($11)or Lillie's signature steak sandwich (with gruyere, sauted onions, frisee, bell peppers and fries, $14) or the full Irish breakfast, served all day ($10 for fried eggs, black-and-white pudding, potatoes, fried tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon, sausages and toast). The kitchen closes at 4 a.m., so hungry (or drunk) night owls are in luck.
