From its plain, flat-front exterior, with only a simple neon sign to mark the spot, Fat Baby looks like a little more than a little speakeasy. Once you pass through the velvet curtains at the door, however, you suddenly find yourself in a space that's cavernous by NYC bar standards. The front bar area is just like your average LES bar, but squeeze your way through the bustling weekend crowd, and you'll find yourself on a spacious dance floor, where on most nights DJs spin hip-hop and Top 40. If you're more into being a wallflower, make your way up to the mezzanine area, an ideal perch to take in some great people-watching; make sure you get there a bit earlier on the weekends if you want to grab a seat. If clubbing isn't really your scene, head down to the basement to catch some live music. It's not the ideal spot to check out a live show - the space is a bit tight and the sound can be a bit lacking - but on some nights you can catch some great talent at work.
