Formerly African restaurant Merkato 55, this caf/restaurant/Italian bodega/rich guy playground opened in June with a casual dining room called La Gazetta, serving sandwiches and brunch fare. For stage two of the opening, theres big news coming from the kitchenformer Fiamma toque Fabio Trabocchi has signed on as consulting corporate chef to help Daniele Sicuranza (chef of the original VP in St. Barts). Owner Pascal Ramette tells us he aims for a high-end, though classic, approachfocusing on top ingredients sourced from a farm hes leasing upstate. Were going for quality ingredients to complement Fabios sophisticated cooking, says Ramette, chatting on the phone from St. Barts. There will be ten homemade pastas, along with daily antipasti and fish specials. Early menu items include ahi crudo, beets with burrata, Chatam cod and lobster spaghetti. Let the ScarpettaVilla Pacri rivalry begin! A basement lounge (formerly Bijoux) is set to open their doors and start denying people entry as soon as the DJ table start to spin.
