Description:

Classic-cocktail evangelist Julie Reiner (Flatiron Lounge), who grew up on Oahu, is truly an island girl at heartshe says so in an endearing message on the menu at Lani Kai, her new tropical-drinks parlor in Soho: "My favorite drinks are the Manhattan and the Mai Tai and I have always wanted to create a destination that blends the two places I call home." Don't use the "T" word, though: Lani Kai is not tiki at all. The drinks menu is divided into focused categories including "Spice and Tropical Teas" (drinks with rosehip, black and hibiscus teas), "Another Day in Paradise" (think fruity and tropical and ice), "Booze and Stirred" (bourbon, rye, tequila) "Old School" (classics like Queen's Park Swizzle, Mai Tai) and "Liquid Luau" (large-format punches and sangria). A food menu goes from Chinese takeout staples like crab wontons to more delicate raw seafood like hamachi and tuna poke). Two large luau-styled platters are quite shareable. A 2-pound rib eye ($85) is served Momofuku-style with lettuce cups for the table.
