Keg No. 229

Location & Contact:

229 Front St.
New York, NY 10038
212-566-2337

Description:

While Keg No. 229 is a bar for beer lovers, you won't find the brew-slamming crowd that frequents the other favorite Financial District beer hall Ulysses. This spot is operated by the folks who own Bin No. 220, an equally classy wine bar across the street. Expect a well-curated and rotating selection of 10 draft beers, along with about 30 more available by the bottle (and by the can, if you're feeling particularly lowbrow). The bar lets you take full controlnot only can you select your own craft brew, you can pour it; the tables each have their own spigot, so you can act as your own tender (sure beats bartending school). The building dates back to the "Gangs of New York" era, and the spot's history is called out by the exposed brick and old-timey wallpaper. One difference? We bet the bar-goers in the early 1800s didn't get to pour their own beer.
