The booze comes cheap, there's room to spare, and the vibe depends entirely on what color glasses you choose to see through. Nolita's mostly underground Botanica bar straddles a fine line in the space once occupied the venerable Knitting Factory: Is it a grime-free but dimly lit dive with a DJ spinning a bit of everything, or is it a lounge where you can collapse into frayed couches, can of PBR in hand (shot of Jim Beam in the other)? Your call, but let's just say it's both. While the bar itself can get congested, there always seems to be space in the back for a crowd of any size, and although it's mainly a drinking destination, weekly comedy shows and seasonal Thrift On clothes swap parties, among other periodic events, land on Botanica's schedule.
