Description:
Because the city doesn't have enough subterranean drink dens catering to the late-night crowd. At least that's what the owners of the West Village restaurant De Santos thought when they converted their basement into this uber-hip underground space. This one is different from spots like The Cabin Down Below and Liberty Hall for a few reasons. No other basement bar takes their name from a famous '60s rocker who really liked some guy named Bobby McGee (and who was one a resident of the building). Unlike the other spots, they've played down the design aspect of the space and run with a few simple red banquettes that leave plenty of space to party. Also, if you're hungry, Janis will let you order some grub from the respectable Italian joint upstairs. But, people aren't coming here for the food. They want to hear the DJ's who rocked the scene at spots like The Beatrice Inn, and they want to party like a certain 60s musician who probably had some fun here herself.
