There are plenty of spaces that carry history in New York, but not many of them started serving drinks back in the late 1800s and are starting to pour again. This subterranean cocktail den is mixing again - it was recently open as the event space / secret bar Woodson and Ford, but way before than it dished out libations to folks before electricity was a common factor on a night out. Right now - the space is going for a "chic basement" vibethink exposed brick (apparentlyit's originalover 150 years old), leather couches, and an intimate feel that is more appropriate for a quiet date than it is for socializing with strangers. Drinks like the Midnight Manhattanwhich contains a potent pour of Whistle Pig bourbon along with some bitters and a brandied cherry, will keep you lubricated, while a menu of small plates like truffled mac and cheese will keep your stomach full. Just have two of those cocktails, and it will be really easy to pretend you're enjoying classic old New York.
