The scene for serious cocktails in Midtown has completely come alive: You've got the Lambs Club and the new lobby bar at The Royalton, both of which are within spitting distance of this swanky hotel lounge that's mixing up a list of pre-Prohibition cocktails. It's much more intimate than the other two options on 44th Street, with a dark-paneled room that evokes the glamour of 1920s New York; meanwhile, the Degas ballerinas that line the walls give the space a slightly Parisian vibe. A limited number of tables make this a great perch for an after-work rendezvous, preferably one that's related to romance, not business. The cocktails were designed by the head bartender of Raines Law Room, a downtown spot that takes its mixology very seriously. Check out options like the old-timey Poet's Dream, a mix of gin, dry vermouth, bitter and Benedictine. A few sips of a drink here, and you'll never want to go back out into the 21st century.
