Description:

This stylish East Village eatery wants to be a go-to spot for your Northern European cuisine cravings (which we all know you've been having lately). The menu has a heavy Dutch slant. You'll find options like cured halibut and smoked pickle sausage, along with a selection of smorrebrod. Smorre-what? They're sandwiches that are ubiquitous in this area of Europe, served open-face on a big slice of bread that comes topped with things like salmon gravlax. Booze hounds will be delighted by their European libations. The wine list contains offerings from Germany and Austria, and a variety of Dutch and Belgian beers are also available. You'll also be able to find plenty of aquavita few drags of this potent distilled beverage and you'll know why the name is derived from the Latin phrase for "water of life." During the morning, the sunny space operates an on-site bakery and prepares goodies like toast and muffins. They also brew Plowshares Coffee, which managing agent Brendan Spiro assures is as tasty as any Stumptown or other well-loved boutique brand. When you're groggy in the morning hours, you'll realize why coffee lovers call Plowshares their "caffeine of life."
