Whoever decided on the moniker of this East Village bar must have had a highly defined sense of irony. The word 'holiday' typically conveys a spirit of brightness, good cheer and convivialityall of which this joint sorely lacks. Similarly, the phrase 'cocktail lounge' is equally anomalous, as this place has bottled beer (nothing on tap) and booths held together with duct tape. Clearly, in the world of New York dive bars, Holiday Cocktail Lounge is among the top-ranking and regulars wouldn't have it any other way. The Village Voice once named it the Best Place to Go Get Lit by Yourself" and with good reason: the beers are dirt cheap, the shots are dangerously generous and the jukebox is killer. What this bar lacks in ambiance, it makes up for in character. And characters. Case in point: Stefan, the weekday bartender, is a former Olympic soccer star who's been known to spontaneously burst into song on occasion. If you're looking for a no-frills classic (or an ideal representation of the East Village as it once was) belly up to the bar, get a drink and take notes.
