Public Beaches Open

Official public-beach season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, promising a summer of sun, sand and sea from Coney Island, Brooklyn, to Staten Island's Midland Beach to Orchard Beach in the Bronx. The Department of Parks & Recreation maintains a total of approximately 14 miles of beaches, which are located in every borough except Manhattan. Lifeguards are on duty during posted swimming hours (10am to 6pm daily), and surfing is encouraged on two stretches of Rockaway Beach in Queens.
