Description:
After being laid off from his job at Newsweek, professional photographer Tai Dang hatched an interesting plan: head back to his native Vietnam to study the local food for a year, then return to the East Villagehis home of 20 yearsto open a banh mi shop. The tiny counter-service space pays homage to Dang's first career, with captivating photos from Vietnam and Cambodia adorning the walls. The "zon" in the shop's name loosely means "crispy and delicious," and you'll find plenty of crunch provided by the daikon, carrots and baguette of the banh mi, as well as the herbs and greens in the variety of summer rolls. Traditional Vietnamese beverages like tea, fresh soybean drink and of course individually brewed coffee (Dang mixes house-ground coffee with the pre-ground Vietnamese brand to give it some freshness), are available as well.
