Description:
This tiny creperie and cafe on St. Marks Place adds to what may be a new cheap-eats trend. With the recent opening of Bar Suzette and Crepe du Nord, is it possible that crepes will replace banh mi as the next "it" portable meal? Opened by Hummus Kitchen owner Sharon Hoota and his former employee Maor Onono, and named for the Hebrew word for sweet, Motek's menu combines some Middle Eastern flavors with more traditional French-inflected offerings. Sweet crepes are filled with lemon and sugar; Nutella; and a signature "Motek" featuring vanilla cream cheese, halva, roasted coconut shreds, strawberry and honey, finished in a brulee-style torching. The savory options include honey-roasted turkey breast with spinach and aioli, and a vegetarian basil pesto version. In addition to espresso drinks and drip coffee from Lavazza, pressed sandwiches featuring the same ingredients as the savory crepes are available as well. Thanks to the St. Marks location and late hours, there'll no doubt be a few folks stumbling in to refuel with a mid-bar-hopping snack to go.
