Description:

St. Marks Place has long catered to NYUs sizeable Asian population, but Hirai Mong offers an interesting twist: cuisine from the Chinese diaspora in Korea. Like most migrs, Chinese Koreans found a way to meld many of their traditional dishes with those of their adopted homeland. Owner Jinho Jang points to the tang soo yuk (fried sliced pork, beef or chicken) and jajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce and a potato and onion broth) as exemplars of this fusion cuisine. The prices are low, to attract the aforementioned students, and the higher-priced dishes can often feed two or more. Since Jang has long been involved in the jazz scene-especially in Manhattans Korea Town-you can expect a rotating cast of live jazz performers on Saturday and Sunday nights at the festive, capacious bar.
