Description:
Are mussels having a moment? Last fall, Upper East Side bivalve depot Flex Mussels opened a second location, in the West Village. Now this newcomer follows suit, also in the West Village. (Cue the "mussel muscle match" puns!). It's the first solo project from owner Michael Caridi, whose family owned onetime East Side mainstay La Maganette. (Fun fact: Caridi catered Woodstock in the '80s.) The bivalves at Mussel Potabout two-dozenare a well-traveled bunch, hopping from Asia to South America to Southern U.S. of A. There's an Indian version with red curry and coconut milk; a Spanish "sangria" one with red wine, brandy and apples; and Texas pot with pulled pork and barbecue sauce. Of course, New York gets a shout-out, too, with a "Buffalo" version, complete with celery and blue cheese. If you'd rather pass on the mussels (and why would you?), you'll also find surf like lobster sliders and fish-and-chips, along with turf like chicken-and-waffles and grilled rib eye. (Check out our Tumblr blog for Caridi's fighting words about a Flex Mussels showdown).
