A popular West Village eatery whose interior reflects a simple, Zen-like attitude, Souen is a standard neighborhood go-to among vegetarians and health foodies. The menu is composed of nearly 12 pages of macrobiotic-inspired dishes (though not solely, as they offer plenty of fish entrees). Portions are vast, and you can get them all with a side of steamed tofu or seitan (try the deep-fried seitan parmigiana). Some dishes run the way of slightly bland, but it's nothing a side of Souen's wondrously rich tahini dressing can't fix.
