Description:
In 2009, Anita Lo went to Cairo to celebrate her best friend's birthday. She badly needed that vacay alright: That year, she closed her 'cue joint Bar Q, lost out on "Top Chef Masters," and saw her flagship eatery Annisa felled by a fire. Whaddaya know, that Egypt trip was research: The talented chef has now reopened Annisa with a renovated design and a new menu inspired by her travels. A ubiquitous Egyptian dish, stuffed pigeon, is reimagined here as liver-stuffed grilled squab on a bed of fava pureeher riff on tradition ful medames (a kind of fava stew/mash). And traditional South African bobotiean egg-topped meat dishgets a redo as tamarind-chutney-spiced lamb with egg custard. Lo's also doing all of Annisa's dessertswho needs a pastry chef when people love your polvorone (powdered milk) treats? Hmmm, those taste familiar. Why? They were on Bar Q's dessert menuit's Annisa's subtle homage.
