Description:
Tiella is the name of an old Neapolitan cast-iron pan used to create Southern Mediterranean dishes. And it's now also the name of this brick-oven-focused Neapolitan joint on the Upper East Side, courtesy of Cambridge, Mass., transplant Giuseppe Castellano (Gran Gusto) and Naples native Mario Coppola. Shocker alert: They're not serving Neapolitan pies! What they are serving: the eatery's signature namesake dish, which consists of two discs of homemade dough stuffed with various ingredients and fire-baked in the oven. As for those stuffings, they include varieties like stracciatella and truffles, and seafood and buffalo mozzarella. Also on the menu: seafood-intensive pastas, including rigatoni with calamari, and cuttlefish fettucine with scallops. Simple and seasonal are the main focus here, and while most ingredients are imported from Italy, Coppola says he plans to use local growers to supply their tomatoes and basil. Soak up that freshness amid Tiella's rustically modern space, decked out with images of Naples and sparse, dim lighting.
