Paola's would be a find anywhere, but on a quiet side street on the restaurant-starved Upper East Side, it's truly a surprise. Behind the simple storefront facade, the two dining rooms get busy early, and they stay that way all evening. Noise can get out of control, and the service can be brusque. But the food that comes out of the kitchen makes it all worthwhile. The menu changes often, but the fried artichoke appetizer gets raves. Pastas - like wild mushroom ravioli in truffle cream - are the reason to go. The wine list isn't bad either.
