Leave it to the city's celebrity residents to take matters into their own hands. In 2001, Bette Midler partnered with the New York Restoration Project to restore and open the New Leaf Cafe in Fort Tryon Park, the island's northern bastion for amazing views and bucolic park settings. The atmosphere couldn't be more perfectly suited to popping the question, and it's only natural that weddings do big business here. The outdoor patio affords a wonderful summer setting for al fresco dining, and the interior of the '30s stone building is equally cozy and inviting. All this talk about ambience might lead you to forget about the food, and while it's clearly not the top attraction at New Leaf, the menu remains reliable, with a few standout selections. Try the Black Currant Margarita paird with Challah French Toast at brunch, or the Rack of Lamb, with pine nut and goat cheese crust, for an elegant dinner. Who says fine dining is a downtown delicacy?
