Description:
After a virtual monopoly of NYC Portuguese cuisine, Aldea's George Mendes gets some healthy competition from Iberian-vet Alfama, which returns following a two-year absence. A rent hike forced the onetime West Village mainstay to shutter, but they've now hightailed it to greener pastures: Midtown East! They've got bigger digs nowtwo levels divided into four unique spaces, including a semi-hidden private room behind that bar that can seat up to 10 people. Gone are the white tablecloths of Alfama 1.0, as well as its classically structured menu (app, main, dessert); this time around, co-owners Tarcsio Costa and Miguel Jernimo have beefed up their menu of small plates, to encourage a more free-flowing meal (and more sharing). Old faves are still here: the signature seafood stew lobster, shrimp scallops and mussels; the bacalhau with shrimp, carrots and potatoes. They share menu space with new dishes like sage-seasoned rabbit meatballs and grilled razor clams with grapefruit.
