Why have cheese on your burger when you can have it IN your burger? That's the battlecry at this East Village patty joint, where owner Craig Koenig puts his own spin on Minneapolis' famed Juicy Lucy burgera cheese-injected glutton-bombby molding a Pat LaFrieda rib-blend patty over a nugget of pimento cheese. So, if a burst of cheese gushing into your mouth excites you, then you've hit the jackpot! If you'd prefer something less severe, though, Koenig's also got a grass-fed burger piled high with seared onions, pickles and a secret sauce, as well as barbecued chicken sandwich. And fries, of courseWhitmans likes to keep things simple, evident in the eatery's spartan, white-tiled interior with a dash of farmhouse rustic. For the thirsty, growlers of Blue Point or Six Point Righteous Ale are available. Koenig's also got more plans up his sleeve: In August, he says he's planning to open an upscale restaurant in the space below Whitmans.
