Description:
Soul Daddy is the brainchild of amateur chef Jamawn Woods. With the guidance and financial backing of the four investors from NBC's America's Next Great Restaurant, Jamawn's dream of becoming a restaurateur has finally come true.
Jamawn's passion for cooking started at the age of 15. While helping his father make homemade candy, he realized the power of creating something delicious. Over the years, Jamawn taught himself how to cook by continuing to observe and help his father in the kitchen.
That's me pitching my idea of W3's
On the set of America's Next Great Restaurant with the nine other competitors.
Opportunities for a self-taught chef are few and far between, so Jamawn found work in his native Detroit's beleagured auto industry. After being laid off (and a short stint playing professional football in Finland), he decided to return to his passion. Jamawn started W3's (for Woods' Waffles & Wings) serving chicken wings and waffles out of his basement. It quickly became a word of mouth sensation.
When he heard about a new TV show looking to find America's Next Great Restaurant, he applied and was accepted. Jamawn started by pitching a national chain of W3's. Over the course of the show, he adapted his concept to become Soul Daddy, a healthier, lighter take on traditional soul food. In the end, Jamawn's culinary skills, passion and drive outshone the other contestants and Soul Daddy was crowned America's Next Great Restaurant.
