Description:
While "Ukrainian" might be in the name of this East Village restaurant, some people complain that there's not enough of it in the menu. Aside from a few Ukrainian specialities, it read pretty much like any other American diner menu. If you actually are Ukrainian, this place is bound to disappoint; sorry, folks, salo, venegret or olivier here. Novices can grab a bowl of borscht for under $5, while some of the pricery entrees, including vernyky, blintzes, and goulashes, run about $10. (Apparently, UEVR is one of the few places around that serves free Ukranian bread with each meal). It's a bit cheaper than nearby Veselka, though some would say the latter's food is of better quality. If you're really looking for authentic Eastern European food, you might have to head over to Green Point or Brighton Beach, but if you're staying on Manhattan, this is a decent substitute. Tango lessons are given on Friday nights. That's right - tango lessons.
