Taberna seeks to sex up their restaurant-heavy stretch of Amsterdam Avenue with some small plates and a darkly lit dcor. It's easy to see how the elderly patrons at neighboring Sarabeth's could be scandalized by Taberna's design, which is heavy on the red lighting and dark wooden tables. A bar dominates the right side of the space, while the small tables tucked away are perfect for an illicit rendezvous. The menu is a seasonal selection of small plates: White asparagus is drizzled with olive oil and pepper aioli, while a cooling gazpacho contains bits of strawberry for an interesting twist. Complement these dishes with a Malbec from their Spanish heavy list. When the matrons at Sarabeth's frown at you on your way out, you'll know you did something right.
