How's this for vintage: Nick Valenti, the esteemed restaurateur behind the Patina Restaurant Group, has dug deep into his legendary vault and resurrected La Fonda Del Sol, the famed '60s-era Latin-food pioneer. "It was ahead of its time," Valenti tells us about LFDS 1.0, "this notion of tapas and [other] items like empanadas, tortillaswords that people didn't understand then." Helping him with the upgrade: former BarFry toque Josh DeChellis, who traveled with Valenti to northern Spain for inspiration. The results: apps from braised pork cheek to blue corn mini-tacos with sushi-grade tuna, plus mains like veal tenderloin with sweetbreads, garbanzos and jamon Serrano. The spacea caf downstairs, a dining room upstairstakes its design cues from the original, with sunbursts and other circular motifs. Everything literally comes full circle: Valenti got his start in the restaurant biz with a job interview at the original La Fonda Del Sol in 1968.
