Description:
The heart of this East Village wine and tapas bar is Jamon Iberico, a unique Spanish specialty only recently made available in the U.S. It is a kind of ham derived from the acorn-fed Black Iberian Pig, sea-salted and cured for up to three years. Try different cuts here (like shoulder or hind-leg, said to be the best) on small plates along with various cow, goat and sheep's milk cheeses. Chef Mateo (who did time at Le Nacional and blogs regularly at http://blog.chefmateo.com) offers Spanish reserve wines from his own collection. He works this romantic, candle-lit, brick-walled spot like his own little atelier, and can often be seen buzzing in the open kitchen a few feet away.
