A classic steakhouse kept up to the speed of the times- you can imagine the same businessmen chowing down on succulent steaks and carefully seasoned seafood here fifty years ago, carousing at the same high volume though with cigar smoke wafting around the subtle wood-toned dining room. This makes for a pleasant bout of old-fashioned machismo, and the food, though pricey, is a hearty, savory delight.

n New York's high-steaks game, Ben Benson's is a winner. This reliable place, with very good service and a varied menu, has its own distinctive niche in the city's pantheon of prime. You'll enjoy the staples: cocktails of husky shrimp, lobster and crab; beef barley soup; generous salads. Then, move on to the main event.

The double porterhouse is a tender, juicy, excellent steak. It's rivaled by the first-class filet mignon and sirloin. Pork chops with applesauce are a tasty alternative, along with the broiled veal chop and lamb chops. But you also can have a satisfying broiled striped bass, lobsters of epic size and, just in case, southern-fried chicken and veals Parmigiana and Milanese, piccata and Francese. On the side, the creamed spinach is essential. Good company: the combo of cottage fries, zucchini and onion rings, and the mashed potatoes spiked with horseradish. Desserts include hefty cheesecake, apple-walnut sour cream pie, "double ugly" mud cake and a serious chocolate pudding.
