Description:
Could it be that the food economy is in an upswing? After years dominated by new burger, sandwich and noodle joints appealing to the hard luck crowd, an East Village steak parlor rises from the ashes of the short-lived Permanent Brunch. Owner Lesly Bernard (Tillmans, Village Tart) landed on steak as his new metier because, I can grill a steak. Its simple. While a night at a typical steak house often ends in sticker shock, Bernard is keeping prices in line by focusing on smaller 8-ounce portions ($18-22) and sourcing grass-fed beef from more reasonably priced Australian suppliers. He says, I want to serve manageable portions without leaving you in a coma. Besides steaks and burgers, a huge list of accompaniments includes pickled peppers, okra, onions and beets, while side dishes lean toward the caloric: truffle fries, cheddar cheese corn pudding and onion rings. Those smaller portions leave more room for booze, luckily a full bar serves the hard stuff on the rocks or neat, plus beer and wines from a diverse international list.
