Description:
New York City's Little Brazil has the bad luck of being on a drag of W. 46th Street that's just a stone's throw from Times Square, tourist hotels and gimmicky restaurants (we're looking at you, Bubba Gump). Don't let that dissuade you from Emporium Brasil, a former market and newsstand turned restaurant where chef Samira Soares makes an outstanding contribution to savory pastries: salgados. Salgados in general encompass several Brazilian snacks, and represent the country's diverse influences: the Lebanese-inspired beef quibe, a fried meatball of sorts; the Portuguese chicken-and-cheese coxinha, a teardrop-shaped croquette; and the pie-like chicken empada. Also available are shrimp- and hearts of palm-filled pastries. They're enough to distract you from the Saturday feijoada buffet.
