Description:

You know what they say: When God closes one gastropub's door, somewhere else he opens...another gastropub. Fresh off the heels of the shuttering of embattled East Village spot E.U. comes The Clerkenwell, a traditional British gastropub on the LES with a greatest-hits menu of fish-and-chips, Toad in the Hole and beef pie, among others. (It's reportedly named after the pioneering British gastropub, which opened in 1991.) As expected, hearty and heavy fare is the order of the day here, and the place manages the neat trick of looking instantly old and cozy with distressed wood furniture, reclaimed butcher-block tables and inviting tufted banquettes. Marvel at the presto-antiqueness of it all as you slosh through that sticky toffee pudding dessert.
