Fine dining of the French variety may be pass in New York, but this Alsatian spot offers the type of rib-sticking European cuisine that seems to be on the rise. The comfort food revolution, brought on by tough times, seems to have moved from burgers and fried chicken to sausage and sauerkraut. While a menu featuring rsti, aspic and cheese fondue (a la chef Ingrid Ingrid Roettele, formerly of Roettele AG), may evoke images of classic oil paintings and antler trophies, this fire-engine-red corner spot offers a more modern environment for enjoying Old World food. The name is also a bit of a head-scratcher: turns out, it's an ode to a Manhattan diner where the owner, Christos Valtzoglou of local favorite Pylos, spent many a post-party night. A full liquor license is on the way in 2011, but we're partial to beer and wine with this type of hearty cuisine anyway.
