Description:
The Womens Bible Society of New York is one of the oldest Christian organizations in continuous operation in the State of New York. With its remarkable legacy of faithful ministry in the City, Womens Bible Society of New York has consistently fulfilled its purpose through a small Board of Managers and the cooperation of churches and ministries in the five boroughs of New York City.
The Society began in 1816 amid economic downturn and escalating immigration following the War of 1812. On Saturday, May 11, 1816, nearly 400 women met at City Hall. These women, the wives, sisters and mothers of men who had met three days earlier to establish American Bible Society, founded The New York Female Auxiliary Bible Society. Its stated purpose was the distribution of Bibles to those found by personal visitation to be in need of the Gospel.
