Description:
James Bogardus was an American inventor and architect, the pioneer of American cast-iron architecture, for which he took out a patent in 1850. Bogardus demonstrated the use of cast-iron in the construction of building facades in New York City and Washington, DC. Bogardus Mansion on 75 Murray Street is one of his landmark creations and also one of the two remaining cast iron buildings in New York City.
The Bogardus Mansion is one of the earliest extant cast-iron fronts in the city. Italianate in style, it still retains Medusa-headed keystones over the arches on the third and fifth floors, appropriate enough in a medium (cast iron) which was used to imitate stone. Built in 1857 for merchants of fine table china and paint, it resembles a late-fifteenth century Venetian palace. The building is three bays wide and sits on a 25-foot lot. Corinthian columns frame large windows of this beautiful landmark.
