Description:

This statue honors the 58 men of the 7th Regiment who died defending the Union during the Civil War. Created by American sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward, the bronze pieces depicts an American soldier, hands at rest on his rifle.

Officers and members of the regiment funded the sculpture with more than $40,000 in contributions. Ward himself unveiled the piece during its dedication in June 1874, following an elaborate military parade The New York Times described as, one of the most interesting and attractive that the City of New York has witnessed in some time. The statue stands today in its original spot - a grassy incline overlooking the Parks nearby West Loop.
